President Donald Trump this week approved a federal disaster declaration for mid-March winter storms in Nebraska with damage estimates exceeding $64 million. Gov. Jim Pillen announced that Trump had signed the April 11 request this week.

Of those storms, the federal weather agency forecasts that six to 10 will be hurricanes — with three to five of them major. NOAA’s Atlantic hurricane outlook was released during a news conference Thursday, 10 days before the June 1 start of the season.

NOAA released its outlook for the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season on May 22, forecasting a range of 13 to 19 named storms and the odds of an above-normal season reaching 60%. Of the predicted storms, NOAA says between 6-10 will become hurricanes, and 3-5 will intensify to major hurricanes (Category 3+).

NOAA is forecasting as many as 19 tropical storms this year, including six to 10 hurricanes. Half of those hurricanes could reach “major” strength.

As a new air mass moves into the region, storms are possible in the afternoon and evening. The storms are expected to intensify as the day progresses.

Thursday is a First Alert Weather Day​ for the potential of strong to severe storms in the afternoon and evening hours.

At 11:51 a.m. on Thursday, the NWS Fort Worth TX released a severe thunderstorm watch in effect until 4 p.m. The watch is for Denton, Wise and Jack counties.
