In 1746, tartan kilts were outlawed in Scotland. That ban would help the garment become world-famous. The iconic piece of Scottish garb has a surprisingly contentious history.

The kilt includes green, red and blue stripes and is made from King Charles III tartan, a new variety of the cloth designed by the Scottish Tartans Authority in 2023.
