KOLKATA, India (Reuters) -An Indian police volunteer was convicted on Saturday of the rape and murder of a junior doctor at a hospital in the eastern city Kolkata, in the speedy trial of a crime that sparked national outrage over a lack of safety for women.

A court in India has convicted a man of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor - a crime that sparked nationwide outrage. Sanjay Roy, a hospital volunteer worker, was found guilty over the attack, which happened in August last year at a hospital in Kolkata city in West Bengal state.

A special court in Kolkata on Saturday convicted Sanjay Roy in the RG Kar rape and murder case. A civic volunteer, Sanjay Roy was named the "sole prime accused" in the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 last year.
