A new Kilauea eruption began in a remote area of Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park on Sunday, Sept. 15. This is the first eruption on Kilauea’s middle East Rift Zone (MERZ) since 2018 and it poses no immediate threat to life or infrastructure.

After five days of activity, the eruption at Kilauea has paused according to an update Friday morning from the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

An HVO update shortly after 10 a.m. reported that lava flows at the remote crater crusted over late Thursday evening, and while some minor lava fountaining was observed from one end of the volcanic vent this morning, that activity ceased by 10 a.m.

Kilauea volcano erupted briefly on Sunday night, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said. The eruption occurred just west of Napau Crater on the middle East Rift Zone in Hawaiian Volcanoes National Park sometime between 9 and 10 p.

According to an HVO report, a pair of fissures formed west of Napau Crater on Kilauea’s middle East Rift Zone likely between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. From each fissure, lava flowed for about 50 meters before the eruption ceased.

The layoffs, which were first reported by The San Diego Union-Tribune, will take effect the week of November 12. The layoffs affect employees at 16 facilities across San Diego, including the company's headquarters,
