Storm Éowyn is gathering strength, supercharged by the Arctic blast that moved through the US, and has the potential to trigger power outages and travel disruptions across the UK later this week.

Soon afterwards, notably windy conditions will become widespread into the early hours of Friday as Storm Éowyn (pronounced "Ay-oh-win") moves close to the north west of the British Isles, where the strongest impacts will be felt.

Multiple warnings have been issued across Northern Ireland as Storm Éowyn makes its way. The storm is expected to bring possible damage and disruption to parts of Ireland and the UK as it tracks east from the Atlantic.

Storm Éowyn is likely to cause severe disruption to rail services across northern England, a train operator has warned. Wherever possible, Northern Rail has advised passengers not to travel on Friday, stressing "trains may be cancelled at very short notice with onward connection not possible".
