Great Lakes freighter freed from Lake Erie ice
The lake freighter Manitoulin, stuck in the growing Lake Erie ice field off Buffalo since Wednesday, is getting help from yet another icebreaking vessel from the Canadian Coast Guard Saturday.
The U.S. Coast Guard said that with ice forming, its fleet of icebreakers has begun working to keep shipping underway on the Great Lakes.
The ice coverage in Lake Erie has rapidly expanded to 80% this week. February and March are peak maximum ice coverage periods for the Great Lakes.

The 202-metre Manitoulin had dropped off a load of wheat and was heading back to Sarnia, Ont., when it became stuck in ice that was rapidly forming in sub-zero temperatures off the Buffalo shoreline.
Ice coverage for all of the Great Lakes combined was 23.21% – the highest since February 26, 2022, when it was 56.1%. At the beginning of this month, ice coverage was less than 2% across all the lakes.
