During the week of July 28-Aug. 3, “ KPop Demon Hunters ” achieved not only its seventh week on the Netflix Top 10, but became one of the streamer’s most popular titles ever.

KPop Demon Hunters director Maggie Kang already has material in mind for a potential sequel. The animated musical centers on K-pop girl group HUNTR/X — comprised of singers Rumi (Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong),

Netflix is hosting the special two-day event in North America over the Aug. 22-24 weekend. The singalong will also play in theaters in the U.K., Australia and New Zealand.

This week, viewership for “KPop Demon Hunters” outpaced that of “Night Always Comes,” which came in second place with 11.3 million views, as well as “My Oxford Year,” which came in third place this week with 11 million views.

“KPop Demon Hunters” plays on that with their storyline about an all-girl singing group, who, in addition to being stars in that genre, also hunt demons out to consume human souls in a bid to protect their fans. One of their biggest challenges? A rival boy band that are actually demons in disguise.

You don’t have to be a fan of K-pop or fantasy to be able to relate to the half-demon feeling like she had to hide part of her true self from the outside world. Keeping her patterns hidden could be a metaphor for so many things, and I loved the movie’s message of embracing your truth, inner demons and all.
