Crews with the department rolled through East Tennessee Thursday dumping brine on major roads, including highways that cut through Knoxville. Brine is a kind of chemical sprayed on roads before expected winter weather to help prevent snow and ice from freezing onto the roads.

As another winter weather system approaches the region, News Channel 11 spoke with the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) to obtain insight on how its crews prepare roadways for snow and ice.
