Alex Ovechkin is knocking on the door of hockey history and the title of the greatest scorer the sport has ever seen. The Washington Capitals legend is closing in on breaking the NHL scoring record of 894 career goals currently held by “The Great One” Wayne Gretzky.

NHL star Alex Ovechkin picked up another record on Thursday night as he moved closer to replacing Wayne Gretzky as the league’s all-time leading scorer.

OTTAWA -- Alex Ovechkin scored his 874th NHL goal at 3:07 of overtime, giving the Washington Capitals a 1-0 win against the Ottawa Senators at Canadian Tire Centre on Thursday.

Ovechkin has 21 goals in 29 games, including six in 11 games since returning from a broken leg that held him out for 40 days. He's scoring at a pace of .72 goals per game and 2.49 goals per 60 minutes, the most in the league of any skater.

Leevi Meriläinen joined an exclusive — but not enjoyable — club for goaltenders, becoming the 179th netminder that Ovechkin has beat over his 20-year career. Ovechkin's goal on Meriläinen moved him past Jaromir Jagr for the all-time record of most goalies scored on in the history of the NHL.
