TROY, Ala. -- "Groundhog Day" the movie came out in 1993, but Marshall University's women's basketball team has revived the film in 2025.

The key to winning basketball games is to score more points than the opponent. While that's not a monumental revelation, it's certainly relevant to Marshall University's men's team's 7-7 record. The inability to put ball in basket has cost the Thundering Herd in its losses.

Nate Martin made 1 of 2 free throws with 3:39 to go to give Marshall a 57-54 lead. The Herd would not score again as it made one only of its last 10 shots. In the final 3:43, the Herd missed seven shots and had one shot-clock violation.

If Marshall didn’t win as many nonconference men’s basketball games as it had hoped for, what the Thundering Herd might have found was plenty of players it thinks can contribute to that pursuit in Sun Belt Conference play.
