A pedestrian was killed in a crash Wednesday evening on the Kennedy Expressway. Illinois State Police said the crash happened around 5:43 p.m. in the southbound lanes near Canfield Avenue. A preliminary investigation indicated that troopers responded to a report of a fatal crash.

A pedestrian entered the left traffic lane for unknown reasons and was struck by a vehicle. Debris from the crash entered the middle lane and hit another vehicle, state police said.

A person is dead after being hit by a vehicle on the Kennedy Expressway Christmas evening. Illinois State Police troopers responded to the inbound Kennedy between Canfield and Harlem for a report of a deadly crash.

"Any time we lose a trooper hurts, but today is Christmas Eve here on December 24, so it kind of hurts in a particular way," ISP Dir. Brendan Kelly said.

"This is a sad day for the Illinois State Police as we mourn the death of Trooper Clay M. Carns, who was killed while serving the people of Illinois and working to keep our roadways safe,” Illinois State Police Director Brendan Kelly said in a statement.

Illinois State police have arrested a 69-year-old man and charged him with violating Scott's Law in the death of Clay Carns, 35.
