Hurricane Erin weakened to a Category 3 hurricane on Sunday as its outer bands continued to reach the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico with heavy rains and strong winds.

Erin became a Category 3 hurricane in the Caribbean early Saturday and is expected to strengthen further during the day, the National Hurricane Center reported.

"Some additional strengthening is expected over the next 12 hours followed by gradual weakening," NHC said.
