Before passing almost directly over the Houston region on July 8, when it caused widespread power outages and contributed to dozens of deaths, Hurricane Beryl devastated multiple Caribbean islands and was the earliest Category 5 storm on record in the Atlantic basin.

Storm names are given on a rotating alphabetical basis. Particularly deadly or damaging storms have their name removed from the rotation.

Hurricanes Helene, Milton and Beryl were so nasty last year that their names are being retired. The World Meteorological Organization on Wednesday officially replaced the names of the 2024 storms that killed more than 300 people and caused more than $119 billion in damage.
